Group Crit 1

In a group tutorial I weighed up the pros and cons of both ideas.

Idea 1
Pros:
·         Fun
·         Problem solver for not being able to actually go out. E.g. tight on money, too lazy or nobody to go with
Cons:
·       Too expensive to create
·        Flat image of the space on the app.  If a video was used instead, the movement would not be controlled by the user

Idea 2
Pros:
·         Could re-experience what you can never actually go through again
·         Use of  different senses
Cons:
·       Could end up being cliché and tacky, as the sounds can be similar to 70’s hippy relax music, whereas my intentions where more serious
·       No access to workshops over the majority of the project time, an issue when experimenting and creating

As both ideas had pros and cons, I will mix elements of both ideas together to create simulation.
·         Fun element of a social place (Pub) - idea 1
·         The user having to use all their senses - idea 2

Initial Ideas

1.       Simulation of being at social public places when you’re alone, e.g. pub.
Headphones playing sounds from the place, goggles displaying what you would see when there. (There is an app on the iPod/ ipad (360 Panorama) where you can capture an area then view it elsewhere; when the iPod/ipad is turned more of the space you can see).

2.        Giving experiences that a lot of people cannot have, cannot remember and will never get again, e.g. being in the womb. Creating an installation of the inside of a woman’s womb, able for a single participant to climb in and take the foetus position.
The use of senses would be a big part of the simulation, Sound, Feel (temp and amount of space), vision.

Questions

Below are some questions I should consider and will aid me to create a simulation? I will refer back to these questions when designing.

1.       Does the work have a real-world context?

2.       Is it an intervention, a performance, a service?

3.       What constitutes experience?

4.       How can you artificially replicate it?

5.       Is it a single participant or a group?

6.       Is it public or private?

Artists Work- Nelly Ben

The Soyuz Chair- Nelly Ben

The Soyuz chair accurately reproduces the 3 stages of the Soyuz rocket launch. Reclining into launch position, you face the sky, put on your headset, and use the control panel to select your mode; just a single stage, or the full lift off experience.
5…4…3…2…1…., Which planet will you land on?

This project was developed in collaboration with the astronaut Jean Pierre Haignere who lifts off twice with the Soyuz Rocket.

I really like how Ben Hayoun has given the experience which the majority of people will never have. I would also like to look into creating a simulation like that.
I also think being able to have the experience in your home is effective as it’s humorous in a way, as you would never have to leave your house, having all fun or extreme experiences on your doorstep.  As I think this is a good Idea I want to create something for people to experience while at home.

Artists Work- Olafur Eliasson

The weather Project - Olafur Eliasson

The weather project was installed at Tate Modern, London in 2003 as part of Unilever series.
The subject of the weather has long shaped the content of everyday conversation. Olafur Eliasson takes this ubiquitous subject as the basis for exploring ideas about experience, mediation and representation.
In this installation, representations of the sun and sky dominate the expanse of the Turbine Hall.

From looking at this work of Eliassons, I like how the audience experience the simulation without having to play a part in it.
How he has used an everyday subject which we experience all of the time, but may not think much of and represented it in a closed space, I feel is very interesting.

Film Research

West World

Stepford wives

Looking at these films inspired the idea of creating a simulation role play, similar to what happens in the film ‘West World’, where people dress up and act out different past times, films or a perfect fantasy lifestyle.
Even though I was very interested in this idea I found it hard to create something original.

‘Design and build a simulation which trigger a specific experience or emotion in the user/ viewer’.

To help me get inspiration on creating a simulation, I am researching into existing simulations, Artists Work based around simulations and films.

Below is a list of existing simulations:

•Arcade games

•Xbox Kinect /Wii

•Virtual worlds-‘second life’

•Simulation training- medical/Armed Forces/Pilots

•Simulation Resorts- Disneyworld

•Fantasy living- films- Stepford wives, Pleasantville
