Evaluation

I am pleased with the outcome of this project and feel the sound works well with the film. Creating the sock puppets was challenging as I had to keep ensuring I stitched the parts together in the correct place because they fell differently when wearing the sock on my hand.

The Unfixable Hole - Final Piece

Wednesday, 7 December 2011

Group Crit

After producing the video I got feedback from my peers and tutor, I got a positive response as they thought the video was humorous and clearly showed the meaning of creating an unfixable hole. However as I produced this as a silent film they thought adding sound could make the work more successful. Due to the creepy feel the film has, an idea was put forward to use sound similar to those found in old silent movies.

I then went on to research old silent films (e.g. Charlie Chaplin) to find sound which could go with my film. I looked at old silent horror films as the sound would be more suited to my video.

Monster Sock

After creating a selection of monster sock puppets, the best was chosen to use in a puppet show video of the unfixable hole.

Idea 2

I have chosen to take forward idea 2 of creating a humours situation why the sock cannot be fixed.

I liked the idea of using an actual sock; therefore I created different designs for making monster sock puppets.

Artist Research - 'Lego'

Jan Vormann spent three years travelling the world repairing crumbling walls and monuments with Lego.

Like Vormann i am also looking at trying to fixs holes using unusaual methods. Where as Vorman has actualy fixed the problem hole, i want to create a barrier of fixing it.

Ideas 1,2 and 4

Idea 1:
This idea is very literal, however I feel I could make an interesting a successful final piece.
To try and create a hole that is too hard to fix, I could experiment by making different holes and trying to fix them myself, doing this till there is a hole I cannot fix.

Idea 2:
I thought this idea could be split into two, as it could be a cartoon image or it could be an actual sock. From looking on the internet I found these images that could inspire this idea.

Idea 4:
I think this idea can produce some good and funny images. However after trying to think were to take it, I don’t think I can develop it much more. Apart from, actually producing this idea as an installation, but it would be very time consuming.

Object - The Sock Project

‘Fixing a hole in a sock is easier than you think’. Challenge this statement by making it much harder than it necessarily needs to be to fix the hole.

I thought this project was quite unusual that’s what made me choose it. I started to think about all the different ways I could challenge the statement.

Below is a list of my inital ideas:

  1. Physically create a hole in a sock that is too hard to fix.
  2. Use my imagination to create a humorous situation why the sock cannot be fixed e.g. monster sock.
  3. Missing equipment or replaced by other equipment e.g. chopsticks instead of a needle.
  4. Enlarge certain items e.g. a huge pin with normal size cotton and sock.
I like numbers 1, 2 and 4. As I am unsure of which idea to choose, I am going research these 3 ideas.
